What is a Food Safety Program?

A food safety program (or a food safety plan) is a set of documents that identify, prevent, and correct potential safety hazards in your restaurant, café, or food services business. It is essential for compliance, especially if you are catering to large groups or serving food to vulnerable populations such as those in hospitals or aged care facilities. Your food safety program must comply with the new code 3.2.3a (Australian and New Zealand Food Standards), which requires minimum record-keeping documents for all food businesses. At Food Agent Australia, we ensure your program meets these requirements and is tailored to your specific operations.

The Food Agent Australia Difference

At Food Agent Australia, we communicate with the relevant authorities on your behalf, making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. We offer different levels of food safety programs to suit your needs:

Food Safety Program Diary

This is the base level required for all food businesses as part of their food business license. It includes all record-keeping, documentation, and control logs that need to be implemented within your operations. Councils conduct annual inspections as part of your food business license and may ask to see these records, especially if a complaint has been made against you. These documents are vital evidence of your compliance.

Full Food Safety Program

This comprehensive manual covers all aspects of your business operations, outlining how you need to operate to stay compliant. It includes the Food Safety Program Diary with all relevant record-keeping. This level of program is required if you are a caterer or if you serve food to vulnerable persons (e.g., schools, hospitals, child care centers).

For businesses serving vulnerable populations, the food safety program must be externally audited and accredited. Our external auditor reviews the program we create, providing a “written advice” document on its compliance. We then submit the food safety program and written advice to the council for review and accreditation. Post-accreditation, it is required to have the program externally audited annually (or as per the council’s advice).

What is a Food Business Compliance Audit & Do I Really Need One?

A food business compliance audit ensures that your facility meets all licensing and food safety requirements. It covers aspects such as cleanliness, hygiene, and management procedures. In Queensland, a compliance audit is mandatory when setting up or expanding a food processing business.

What’s a Food Safety Supervisor Do?

After undergoing training and certification, a food safety supervisor acts as a point of contact for local authorities, designs and maintains food safety protocols, builds measures to prevent hazards and trains staff in workplace safety procedures.

They also ensure your customers aren’t exposed to food-borne illnesses while they eat on your premises and help protect your company in food management.

You cannot be a food safety supervisor without the relevant qualifications. If you need assistance with your food safety program compliance or more information on food safety regulations or how to start a food business, contact us.
