Looking to start your mobile food business?
In this blog post you’ll find Food Agent Australia’s top 3 licencing tips to think about before buying your food truck and starting your mobile food business.
Everything from location to the difference in food business classifications that most food business owners don’t understand. Read on to learn more!
1. Your location matters as a mobile food business!
When getting your mobile food business licence, you can only get your licence based on your place of residence. So, whether you’re transferring an existing licence, or purchasing a new one, the licence can only be issued in the council region where you reside.
For example, if you live in the Gold Coast and have taken over an existing mobile food business licence that was issued in the Gold Coast, then only a licence transfer is required.
If, however, you bought a food truck from the Gold Coast. but you live in the Brisbane City Council region, Food Agent Australia would have to help take you through a new licence application for your mobile food business.
Please note that even though you can only be licenced in one council area, you can operate anywhere throughout Queensland, provided the truck comes back to your place of residence.
2. You can’t park your mobile food truck anywhere
Mobile food business, are often permitted to operate on private property, however, operating on council land requires a separate permit.
If you choose to work on council land, Food Agent will then take you through a process called Roadside vending or Commercial activity on council land application, which is a separate permit.
3. Know what your food business classification
Not a lot of food business owners know the difference between food business classifications. There is a difference, for example, between going to an event to sell burgers to individual customers, versus “catering” burgers for the same event.
When catering for an event such as a wedding where someone has hired you to come to the event and you’ve been paid one lump sum to cater for the entire group, that’s classified as “catering”.
In that circumstance, you’ll also need to go through a food safety program accreditation as well which Food Agent Australia provides a free course or referral to other accredited courses for food truck owners to take.
On the other hand, if you are hired for the same event and are cooking to order and each customer is paying, you don’t need a catering licence because that’s not considered catering.
That business model just requires a mobile food truck licence which Food Agent Australia can help gain quick approval for.
Did you know? You can use your mobile food business licence to operate at markets. No additional licensing is required.
